“Everyday I sit down to eat at a table that came north with the Empire Loyalists during the American Revolution in the late 1700s. It was made by one of my forefathers. It was with this heritage that I was raised in rural Nova Scotia. Some of my earliest memories include the smell of freshly sawn pine and the sound of the jack-plane. My father worked with wood and restored the 150 year-old farm house that I grew up in. At the same time I learned from him the basic skills in wood-working.
Through experience as well as the invaluable knowledge gained from the published wisdom of masters such as Thos. Moser and Christian Becksvoort, my reverence for wood and well designed furniture grew. In addition, direct examination of the joinery in antiques has tutored me in the expert ways of the ancient craftsmen who built them. I saw the need for the return to solid wood furniture that lasts. In direct response for a growing disdain of the mass-produced and often poorly made furniture, I started Jonathan Otter, Cabinetmaker. It behooves me to carry on the tradition of fine furniture making that characterized my forefathers.” - Jonathan Otter
