ARTIST STATEMENT
"We respect the natural beauty of trees. Our art involves letting the wood shape our creative impulses. The result is furniture that is beautiful and also useful. We hope to preserve the grace and feeling of a tree in a forest - the "spirit of the tree" often lost in factory-made furnishings.
Spirit of the Tree functional art is part of our commitment to the natural environment.
We try to make responsible choices at every step in the process of making each unique piece. From using sustainable transportation, "waste" wood and ecologically gentler finishes - we work to be the change we wish to see in the world.
All of our work is meticulously crafted to last decades of daily use. We have been creating Spirit of the Tree furniture since the summer of 2004. We draw on several years experience making and selling crafts. Our furniture art grew from a desire to make a living while treading lightly on the earth. We gather inspiration from many sources: the beauty of the forest, a passion for working with our hands, and a long tradition of “rustic” furniture makers."
Camille Dumond works in community health and Michael Barton is an engineer and craftsman.
PRODUCT INFORMATION
Spirit of the Tree products use marine glues for strength and durability. All natural finishes are made from linseed and tung oil or a natural wax, which can be renewed by lightly rubbing with linseed oil (wipe off the excess). All "found" wood is baked to kill the little critters that might munch it later. Although durable, these pieces are meant for interior use, or for use on a covered deck, protected from the elements.
Notes: Spirit of the Tree can accommodate custom orders. Please contact the Gallery to make your inquiry.
