Dieter lives in Germany with his wife Rosemarie. On a trip to Nova Scotia, they fell in love with the area and eventually purchased a home in 2000, in Annapolis Royal, where they spend their summers.

Dietar, a lithographer for a publishing company for over 20 years, changed careers when technology replaced handwork in the industry. He took to hand carving wooden model ships, but felt it was too time consuming, and began carving exquisite miniature figures: acrobats, human figures, elegant and whimsical shoes.

Dieter uses a variety of tools to create his miniature sculptures. First, he uses a jig-saw to cut out the shapes, and then, with a shoemaker's knife, he settles into the painstakingly fine detail work that you see in his work. With his artist's 'loop', a magnifying device, he checks for any flaws.

Dieter is self-taught at the art of wood carving, and loves the challenge of the detail work.
